85 dead and many were injured in the Yemen stampede

Hundreds had gathered in a school for charitable offerings


At least 85 people were killed in a stampede in Yemen's capital Sanaa on Thursday as hundreds gathered in a school to receive supplies, according to witnesses and Houthi media.

 

According to Houthi rebels, many more were hurt in the attack. Several videos of the incident have gone viral on social media, showing people running in large numbers and corpses laying on the ground. 

 

A swarm of people can be seen, some screaming and shouting and reaching out to be dragged to safety.

 

According to Reuters, 13 people are in serious condition, according to Al Masirah TV, a television news source owned by the Iran-aligned Houthi movement. According to Al Masirah TV, the head of health in Sanaa provided details on the injured.

 

The rush occurred during the distribution of charitable offerings by merchants in the closing days of Ramadan, according to a statement issued by the Houthi-controlled Ministry of Interior, as reported by Reuters.

 

According to the account, hundreds of individuals crammed into a school to receive the donations, which totaled 5,000 Yemeni riyals, or nearly $9 per person. According to ANI, which claimed a Houthi security official, at least "85 were killed and more than 322 were injured" in the rush in Sanaa's Bab al-Yemen district.

 

The dead and injured have been sent to local hospitals, according to the interior ministry, as reported by the rebel Saba news agency, ANI.
