Cloud Burst in Amarnath!

The Amarnath Yatra is temporarily suspended after the fatal tragedy and decisions on its resumption will be taken after rescue operations


The Amarnath Yatra has announced suspension as on Friday a fatal incident took place. A sudden cloudburst caused havoc amidst the yatris.

 

The devastating flood was caught on camera and the clips made it to the internet. Numerous Amarnath pilgrims showed water rushing into the tents. In one clip water was seen pouring down a gorge and washing away tents in a matter of seconds. 

 

The cloudburst reportedly happened around 5:30 pm. The community kitchen and tents nearby were washed away. A rescue operation team was immediately launched by the security forces' disaster management agencies.

 

Although because of the difficulties faced during terrain rescue efforts might be hampered at night. Lt Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Manoj Sinha said he notified the Prime Minister and Home Minister about the situation. The centre assured help to all possible extents. 

 

Army helicopters have been launched to shift the injured to hospitals. A spokesperson of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police or the ITBP reported, "Situation is under control, rains are still going on.

 

Looking at the hazard level, the Amarnath Yatra has been halted temporarily due to the area being inundated. If the weather remains normal and makeshift arrangements are made, then the yatra can be resumed tomorrow,". 

 

A senior ITBP officer said the water gushed down from above and the sides of the cave as it rained heavily at the upper reach. The injured Yatris are being airlifted for treatment. So far, fifteen people have been killed and more than 40 are missing after the incident.
