Delhi: Heavy Downpours Result Traffic Jams, Water logging, Affected Flight

It's the first moderate-intensity storm of this season.

The capital and its NCR have been facing huge downpours since Sunday night. Heavy rain and thunderstorm in Delhi and its adjoining areas early this morning led to massive traffic jams and affected flight operations at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.

Trees got uprooted in some parts of the national capital and traffic jams were reported in various stretches, including ITO, DND and near AIIMS, on the first working day of the week. Moreover, many areas are facing water logging due to the same.

According to the weather department, this was the first moderate-intensity storm of this season.

Between 5:40 am till 7 am, the temperature in the city fell by 11 degrees Celsius, from 29 degrees Celsius to 18 degrees Celsius, news agency ANI reported, quoting the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The airport authorities have requested the passengers to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information.

Looking into the weather conditions, the Delhi Airport tweeted, "Due to bad weather, flight operations at Delhi airport are affected. Passengers are requested to get in touch with the airline concerned for updated flight information."

Moreover, IndiGo tweeted, "#6ETravelAdvisory: It's pouring in #Delhi. Flight departures and arrivals are getting impacted. Keep enough travel time in hand while traveling to the airport. To check your flight status https://bit.ly/2ThVfU6. For assistance DM us on Twitter/Facebook."

"#FlyAI :Due to inclement weather in Delhi, flights are getting diverted & delayed. Traffic congestion on roads is also likely. Passengers are requested to keep sufficient time in hand to report for flights," the Air India tweeted.

In an earlier tweet, the IMD said vulnerable structures and kutcha houses could suffer damage due to the thunderstorm, and that traffic disruptions are likely.

It also predicted thunderstorms with moderate intensity rain and gusty winds with speeds of 60-90 Km/h would continue to occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi and NCR during the next two hours.

Strong winds and heavy rain uprooted trees in parts of Delhi which resulted in roads getting blocked.

Many passengers travelling also tweeted the harsh conditions they are facing due to heavy downpours.
