Though the UN formally recognized June 1 as the Global Day of Parents, its origins can be traced back to the 80s.
According to the UN website, the international community began realizing the important role a family plays in the lives of individuals.
To emphasize this, the UNGA adopted a number of resolutions and proclaimed the International Year of the Family and the International Day of Families.
The UN said that the presence of parents is very important for the full and harmonious development of a child's personality.
It added that children should grow up in a family environment and in an atmosphere that is surrounded by happiness, love, and understanding.
