World Environmental Health Day 2023
Our health is influenced by our surroundings, including the area we live, the food we eat, the atmosphere we live in, and the air we breathe. Living in an environment that is healthy and improves our quality of life is crucial. Public health has a division called environment health that focuses on how people and their environment interact. It contributes to the growth of safe, healthy communities that benefit both people and the environment. Additionally, it aids in highlighting the significance of human health and wellbeing.
World Environmental Health Day is observed annually to examine the connection between people and their environment. Here are some things to keep in mind as we prepare to celebrate the big day-
Date:
September 26 is designated as World Environmental Health Day each year. The day is Tuesday this year for World Environmental Health Day.
History:
The International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) has spent the last 32 years attempting to solve the health issues that endanger human life and are the cause of their suffering. The International Federation of Environmental Health announced September 26 to be a yearly celebration of environmental health in 2011. The purpose of this day is to increase environmental health awareness.
Significance:
The topic for this year's World Environmental Health Day is Global Environmental Public Health: Standing up to protect everyone's health every single day. Environmental health is one of the biggest areas of study in public health because of the many ways that external variables can influence what people consume, how they live, and how they grow.
On its official website, the International Federation of Environmental Health stated that these forces "can be about addressing our natural environment (as in the case for clean water or sanitation), but they can also be the result of human actions." On this day, a number of organizations join forces to spread the word about the value of environmental health and look into environmental protection strategies.

The first green hydrogen-powered buses are introduced in Delhi
NEW DELHI: On Monday, oil minister Hardeep Singh Puri flagged off the trial run of two hydrogen buses that the nation's largest oil refiner and fuel retailer IndianOil Corporation had purchased from Tata Motors. This was Delhi's first glimpse into a future where the city's public transportation will be completely emission-free.
At the moment of flagging off the buses that will first operate in the national capital region without passengers, Puri stated that the fleet size would expand to 15 by the end of the year. Routes in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have also been chosen to carry hydrogen buses once the fleet size increases, in addition to Delhi.
A modest green hydrogen facility constructed for the testing at IndianOil's R&D site in Faridabad will provide fuel for the two buses. By electrolyzing water with electricity generated from renewable sources, the facility will produce 75 kg of green hydrogen.
Fuel cells with polymer electrolyte membranes are used to power the buses. They can be refilled in 10–12 minutes, which is comparable to the time it takes for gasoline or diesel cars, and have four tanks with a combined capacity of 30 kg. Four fully fueled hydrogen tanks, according to senior IndianOil executives, would provide a 350 km range.
One of the key components in the worldwide decarbonization process is hydrogen, particularly green hydrogen, which has been identified the "fuel of the future". Using hydrogen in fuel cells causes it to release water vapor, which explains why. In an effort to further enhance combustion and emissions, IndianOil has also undertaken a trial project in which buses were powered by H-CNG, or CNG that has been mixed with hydrogen that has been produced from natural gas.
"The ambitions our administration has for green and renewable energy are big. Through the use of novel fuels like hydrogen and biofuels, India has made significant progress toward low-carbon development and, according to Puri, will be responsible for 25% of the increase in global energy demand over the next 20 years.
For the creation of one kilogram of green hydrogen, approximately 50 renewable energy units and 9 kilograms of deionized water are required.
Scientist warned for another coronavirus in future
Shi Zhengli- one of China’s best-known virologists- also known as “batwoman”, warned that another coronavirus will appear in future in a recent paper written with colleagues. The world must be prepared for another disease like Covid-19 because “if a coronavirus caused diseases to emerge before, there is a high chance it will cause future outbreaks”, she said.
“It is almost certain that there will be future disease emergence and it is highly likely a [coronavirus] disease again,” the study, which is based on an analysis of viral traits, including population, genetic diversity, host species and any previous history of zoonosis, warned
“Sometimes in private conversations, when talking with other public health scholars, we have noticed that intentionally or unintentionally, Chinese authorities are downplaying Covid-19, and some cities have stopped releasing infection data,” a scientist from China's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said as per the report.
Shi Zhengli along with her colleagues identified important hosts of the pathogen, which contain natural hosts such as bats and rodents. They also identified possible intermediate hosts like camels, civets, pigs or pangolin.
“Such studies are not regarded as groundbreaking or technically challenging and thus less valued in the field, but they are important,” the scientist said, adding, “Just like we need a mushroom textbook to avoid eating noxious mushrooms, it’s necessary to establish such tools for pathogens.”
