NEET-PG Admissions Hearing To Be Held On Wednesday

SC agreed to hear a plea after Massive Protest


New Delhi: On Wednesday, The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a plea associated with the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota related to the NEET-PG admissions, after the Centre sought an urgent hearing in the matter.

 

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) N V Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli took note of the submissions of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared on behalf of the Centre in the court, that the matter pertains to admissions to postgraduate medical courses and that students have been facing a lot of difficulties in it.

 

The Chief Justice of India said "If it is a three-judge bench matter, then tomorrow it will be listed before a three-judge bench."

 

The bench head, Justice DY Chandrachud told the Centre on Monday that a bench of requisite strength can be set up by the CJI as the EWS quota matter is being heard by a three-judge bench.

 

Large-scale protests have been held by the doctors of various hospitals under the banner of the Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA) in Delhi and other parts of the country as well over a delay in the NEET-PG counselling, which has been postponed due to the Centre is deciding to revisit the criteria for the determination of the EWS quota.

 

Patient care remained severely affected at three centers that are, Safdarjung, RML and Lady Hardinge hospitals. Some of the Delhi government hospitals were also involved.

 

The protests that were going on for months took an ugly turn when a group of doctors was allegedly beaten up by the police.
