Srinagar’s Dal Lake Freezes-up partially, Coldest Night Since 1991 Recorded

Srinagar records coldest night in 30 years and the Dal Lake freezes.


The famous lake of Kashmiri known as the Dal Lake froze partially on Thursday as the valley was continuously receiving some cold waves with the record of coldest night in 30 years in Srinagar. The weather department official said that Srinagar had recorded a low of minus 8.4 degree Celsius, which is the city’s coldest temperature recorded since 1991 where the temperatures had reached a low of minus 11.8 degree Celsius. The minimum temperature in January 1995 was minus 11.3 degree Celsius. The valley is currently reeling under intense cold.

The base camping area for the Amarnath yatra, Pahalgam in the South of Kashmir had recorded a minimum temperature of minus 11.1 degree Celcius up from the previous night’s minus 11.7 degree Celsius. The gateway to the valley Qazigund recorded a minimum temperature of minus 10.3 degree Celsius.

The valley of Kashmir is under the grip of ‘Chillai-Kalan’ currently. It is a period of 40 days of the harshest period of the winter season when the cold wave grips and the temperature drops considerably which freezes water bodies which include the famous Dal Lake here as well as the water supply lines in various parts of the valley.
