Two Students die by suicide in Kota

Total 23 this year

Police reported that two teenagers committed Suicide in Rajasthan's Kota on Sunday, bringing the year's total of student suicides at the coaching center to 23, which is already the highest in the previous eight years.

A 17-year-old NEET aspirant who was one of these kids committed suicide by jumping to his death from the sixth storey of a coaching facility. The class 12 youngster had been living with his grandparents in the city for the previous three years and was from the Latur area of Maharashtra, according to the police.

It looks that he went to his coaching center to take a test. Devesh Bhardwaj, SHO of Kota's Vigyan Nagar police station, stated that after the test, the student jumped off the institute's sixth floor.

Later in the evening, a student from Bihar, age 18, who was also preparing for the medical entrance exam, was found hanging in his hostel room.

"The student lived in Kota with his sister and cousin, who are also coaching students in kota. He was preparing for the NEET, according to a police officer from Kota's Kunadi police station.

Every year, thousands of students join in Kota coaching centers to prepare for competitive exams.

Data from the Kota Police show that 17 students committed suicide in 2015. Since then, the numbers are 16 in 2016, 7 in 2017, 20 in 2018, and 8 in 2019. Four and none, respectively, fewer suicides occurred during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 as a result of students fleeing the city during lockdowns. The amount increased back to 15 in 2022.

However, even as the district administration rushes to put policies in place to stop the deaths, they are having no impact, the number of student suicide cases this year has already significantly outpaced that of previous year by the end of merely August.

In an effort to prevent students from hanging themselves, the administration forced hostels to install spring-loaded fans earlier this month.

Additionally, in order to monitor kids, coaching centers have implemented techniques like counseling and biometric attendance.
