136 missing to be declared dead in Uttarakhand tragedy

In the tragedy, Rishi Ganga Hydel Project was completely destroyed while the other, Tapovan-Vishnugad Hydroelectric Project was also severely damaged.

The government will declare 136 missing people "presumably dead" after the Uttarakhand flash floods that occurred on February 7. The officials issued a notification to that effect on Monday. Till Monday, the rescue teams had recovered 68 bodies, while 136 are still reportedly missing, according to The Times of India.

In the tragedy, Rishi Ganga Hydel Project was completely destroyed while the other, Tapovan-Vishnugad Hydroelectric Project was also severely damaged. The flash floods that resulted from the glacier burst forced thousands of people to evacuate from the area. Several rescue operation teams- the ITBP, the Army, Navy and Air Force, state and national disaster response forces, local police and paramilitary troops have been working since the tragedy occurred.

Families have been called to test the DNA samples of 136 people who are still missing, reported NDTV. Experts have criticized the hydel projects in the ecologically sensitive region but the central government earlier this month ruled out any connection between an ongoing road-widening project near the Char Dam and the glacier burst, according to NDTV.
