138 dead, 84,000 evacuated amid heavy rains in Maharashtra; IMD issues red alert in 6 districts

The IMD has issued a red alert in six districts of Maharashtra.


 At least 138 people have died in different incidents, including landslides which occurred due to heavy rains in Maharashtra. Around 84,000 people, including over 40,000 in Kolhapur district, have been shifted to safer places in Western Maharashtra's Pune division, officials said, reported NDTV. Reportedly, 54 villages have completely submerged whereas 821 have been partially affected by the floods in Kolhapur district, near River Panchganga.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in six districts of Maharashtra- Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg in coastal Konkan and Pune, Satara and Kolhapur in western Maharashtra. Reportedly, a passenger train derailed between Dudhsagar and Sonaulim in South Goa on Saturday morning after incessant rains lashed the state and resulted in overflowing of various rivers.

Of 138 people, 36 died in a landslide that occurred in the Raigad district near Talai village in Mahad tehsil on Thursday. Other places where landslides took place are the coastal Ratnagiri district and Ambeghar and Mirgaon villages in Satara's Patan tehsil. On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the kin who died.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has also announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased who have lost their lives in landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in different parts of the state. The CM also said that 14 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in the affected areas.
