14 People Arrested in Assam Over Supporting Taliban

Assistant Inspector General Violet Baruah said Assam police were cracking down on Pro-Taliban comments on social media that could harm national security.


14 people were arrested in Assam for alleged social media posts in "support of Taliban," police said on Saturday. The arrests had been made since Friday night and charged under various sections of the Prevention of Illegal Activities Act, the TI Act and the CrPC, a senior police officer told the news agency. "We were on high alert and monitored social media for inflammatory posts," said the Press Trust of India news agency official.

As per the reports, two people each were caught from metropolitan areas of Kamrup, Barpeta, Dhubri and Karimganj, the police said. One person each was caught from Darrang, Cachar, Hailakandi, South Salmara, Goalpara and Hojai districts, officials added.

Assistant Inspector General Violet Baruah said Assam police were cracking down on Pro-Taliban comments on social media that could harm national security. “We register criminal proceedings against these people. Please inform the police if you become aware of anything like this,” he tweeted.
