6 accused were arrested from Anand Vihar, Delhi

New Delhi: Officials said on Friday, 12 August 2022, six people were arrested for their alleged involvement in smuggling of arms and ammunition in Delhi ahead of Independence Day, 15 August.

A huge quantity of ammunition including 2,000 live cartridges were recovered from their possession, officials said.

The accused were arrested from Anand Vihar in the national capital with two bags of cartridges.

A case has been registered and investigation is going on, police said.

As India is gearing up to celebrate its 75th Independence Day this year, Delhi Police has also beefed up security arrangements in the national capital. Forces are on high alert to thwart any untoward incident as police have intensified patrolling and deployed extra pickets at vital installations.

PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the nation from the ramparts of the historic Red Fort, and hence over 10,000 police personnel would be deployed around the Mughal-era monument on the occasion of the 75th Independence Day on August 15, the Delhi Police said on Monday.

Special commissioner of police (law and order) Dependra Pathak was quoted by news agency PTI as saying, "On the occasion of Independence Day, more than 10,000 police personnel will be deployed in different roles across the Red Fort and the routes leading to the venue. We have made flawless and full proof security arrangements for the day."

"We are continuously carrying out our verification drives for the last few months," Pathak then added.
