2 Dead In Delhi Storm, Huge Traffic Chaos, Nearly 300 "Tree Fall" Calls

Rain Lashes In Delhi -NCR!

On Monday, the National capital and the National capital region (NCR) witnessed a severe storm-like situation carrying rain and creating a huge cross across the city and the NCR areas.

Many areas in the city have witnessed falling trees due to extreme blowing wind. Delhi witnessed rain and winds with speeds up to 100kmph pummeled Delhi this evening, uprooting trees and bringing traffic to a juddering halt. Two people were also killed because of the rain.

This is the first storm of "severe" intensity in Delhi since 2018, a Met department official said. A moderate thunderstorm had hit the city last Monday.

The temperature fell sharply by 13 degrees Celsius, according to readings at Palam observatory near the airport, and by 16 degrees Celsius in south Delhi's Safdarjung.

Areas near the Ferozeshah Road, Tolstoy Marg, Copernicus Road, KG Marg, and Pandit Ravi Shankar Shukla Lane had trails of vehicles stranded after the heavy downpour.

East and central parts of Delhi bore the maximum brunt of the storm that peppered the roads with broken tree branches. Close to 300 calls of trees falling were received by civic authorities.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport reported winds gusting up to 100 kmph. The Palam weather station logged a maximum wind speed of 70 kmph.

Thunderstorms are a normal occurrence in Delhi. On average, the city sees such weather on 12 to 14 days in the March to May period, senior IMD scientist R K Jenamani said.
