“I handed over my child to the cops. But I suspect they are involved in the hanging” ; Boy’s father

On Tuesday, after a 22-year-old man, Altaf allegedly killed himself at a police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Etah district, 270 km west of state capital Lucknow. Five policemen have been suspended in the case and has been accused of negligence while the father of the man suspects foul play in his son’s demise.

On Tuesday morning the man Altaf was brought to the police station for questioning in a case that was filed last week which is connected to kidnapping of a woman and forced marriage. In a video statement that has been released on twitter, Etah’s Police Chief Rohan Pramod Bothre claimed that the man “asked for the toilet” at the police station. And when he did not return after a few minutes, the cops went inside only to find him dead.

“He was wearing a black jacket and it appears he hooked the string, attached to the hood of the jacket, to a tap in the washroom and tried to strangle himself. He was brought out unconscious and taken to the hospital where he died within 5-10 minutes,” the Police Chief said. However, Altaf’s father Chand Miyan said “I handed over my child to the cops. But I suspect they are involved in the hanging.”

Last year in December, the supreme court had ordered that all police stations in the country, investigation agencies – including the CBI, National Investigation Agency and Enforcement Directorate- must install CCTV cameras with high vision and audio recording. Security cameras are supposed to cover interrogation rooms, lock-ups, entries and exits. Although it is unclear if the police stations in Uttar Pradesh have CCTV cameras.
