34 Dead in Manipur landslide

28 still Missing...


The massive landslide that hit the Territorial Army Camp in Manipur’s Noney District has hit a total of 34 deaths so far. The officials on Saturday confirmed that out of 34 deaths, 23 were jawans. The officials also confirmed that so far 13 personnel of the Territorial Army and five civilians have been rescued whereas 28 people still stand missing. 

 

On Wednesday, the landslide occurred at the Territorial camp near the Tupul yard railway construction site. The Indian Army, Assam Rifles, Territorial Army and the central and state disaster forces immediately showed up to help the rescuers stuck in the debris. An official released a statement saying, “As officials are facing difficulties due to rains and other factors, a thorough wall radar is also being inducted by air to detect the presence of personnel buried in the debris”. 

 

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh visited the disaster site on Friday along with the top army and civil officials. Chief Minister N Biren Singh also announced 5 lakh compensation to each family of the causalities of the landslide and 50,000 for those who were injured. 

 

West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also tweeted that nine jawans of her state died in the Manipur accident as well. Her tweet said, “Shocked to know that nine jawans of the Darjeeling hills (107 Territorial Army unit) are among the casualties in the Manipur landslide. Deeply mourn the demises and extend all solidarity and support to the next of kin. Heartfelt condolences”.
