4 workers killed in Factory collapse in Khyala


In an incident that took place on Sunday morning around 10 am, the roof of a factory collapsed in Vishnu Garden’s Khyala, trapping six labourers inside who were working. Four of them already died on the way to hospital. While police has arrested the factory owner, Mahendra Pal, who is a resident of Uttam Nagar.

DCP (West) Deepak Purohit said police was informed that a lanter fell and labourers trapped inside through a PCR call. “Police reached the spot and found it to be an old factory of motor stamping work. The roof made for covering the area between the ground and first floors of the factory had collapsed. The injured were rushed to Guru Gobind Singh and Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospitals,” he said.

“The building was made of pieces of metal and other raw material and was overloaded with material because of which it caved in,” said Atul Garg, the Delhi Fire Service Chief stating the cause of the accident.

Guddi Begum, a 45-year-old victim who had been working in the factory for eight years, where parts of a fan were manufactured, had left for work 10 minutes early that day while her son Rizwab reached around half an hour after her. “By the time Rizwan reached the factory, a floor had collapsed. Neighbours told me about the incident and I rushed to see what had happened. My wife had been crushed by a false ceiling that had collapsed... I recognised her from her saree. I had to pull her out myself,” said Mumtaz Shah, husband of the victim adding that the heavy materials were stored on the false ceiling. Another victim is identified as Chaina Devi, a 35-year-old labourer who has been working at the factory for around 2 years at the wage of Rs 6,500 per month. Her husband Nand Ram said she drank tea and left for work at 9 am: “Our rented room is a few steps away from the factory. Around 9.30 am, I heard a loud noise. People were rushing to the spot I left everything and ran... I realised she was no more.” Further adding, how he would manage the household with a salary of Rs 7,000 a month with three children aged 11, 8 and 6.

The other injured victims have been admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital and Guru Gobind Singh government hospital. Hailed from Bihar, one among the two victims is identified as Ramesh aged 35 years and Twinkle, aged 25.
