Five police officials have been suspended in connection with the April 15 killings of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

Ashwani Kumar Singh, a senior Shahganj police official, two inspectors, and two constables are among those suspended.

The cops were questioned yesterday by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) looking into the murder. The five cops were assigned to the Shahganj police station. Shahganj Police have authority over the medical college where Ahmed and his brother were slain

Three guys, named by authorities as Lovelesh Tiwari, Sunny Singh, and Arun Maurya, shot and killed the former MP and his brother.

They disguised themselves as journalists and shot Ahmed and his brother at close range when they were chatting to the media in Prayagraj.

A Prayagraj court ordered the killers to be held in police custody for four days earlier today. The three will be back in court on April 23.

As part of the investigations, the special inquiry team recorded testimonies from the three guys and will reconstruct the murder scene.

The killings were recorded on camera as journalists with microphones followed the two brothers to the hospital for a medical check-up. The attackers, all in their twenties, yelled "Jai Shri Ram" before being apprehended by police.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court decided to hear a petition calling for an independent investigation into the deaths of Ahmed and his brother. The petition will be considered on April 24 by a retired Supreme Court judge.
