6.2 magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia

The earthquake struck Sulawesi Island in the early hours on Friday leaving several dead and hundreds injured.


The 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Sulawesi Island on Friday morning leaving 30 dead and hundreds injured. The death toll could rise as more people are feared to be buried in the rubble of the collapsed buildings, as per the rescue agency. A hospital is among the collapsed buildings in Mamuju where six people and their families are trapped, as per the local media.

The epicentre of the earthquake was six kilometres northeast of Majene city at a depth of 10 kilometres.In Majene, earlier the death toll was four and hundreds were injured. Thousands fled the affected area as authorities have warned of strong aftershocks as the island felt the tremors twice. Tremors were felt at around 01:00 local time on Friday. Indonesia has always been prone to earthquakes and tsunamis as it lies on the Pacific Rim. In 2018 also Sulawesi Island was hit by an earthquake that killed more than 2,000.
