7.0 magnitude earthquake jolts southwest Mexico, leaves 1 dead

The epicenter of the earthquake was 11 miles, that is, 17.7 km northeast of Acapulco in Guerrero state.


A strong earthquake of 7.0 magnitude jolted southwestern Mexico near the beach resort of Acapulco on Tuesday night. The earthquake killed at least one person who was crushed by a falling post and also damaged buildings.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 11 miles, that is, 17.7 kms northeast of Acapulco in Guerrero state. The earthquake shook the hillsides around the city causing rock falls, severe damage to trees and buildings and also resulted in power outages in the neighbouring states.

Guerrero State Governor Hector Astudillo told Milenio TV that a man was killed when a post fell on him in Coyuca de Benitez, a town that lies west of Acapulco. Officials reported that there was leakage of gas at a cafe and a hotel and a public hospital were also damaged in the mishap.

However, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that there were no major damages in Guerrero as well as in the neighboring areas of Oaxaca, Mexico City and other states. People evacuated buildings as the aftershocks rattled the city.
