90-year-old lady gang raped in Tripura.

Two men gang raped an old woman on the night of Durga Puja

An incident of gang rape took place at Kanchapur in North Tripura where a 90-year-old woman was allegedly raped by two men during the night of Navmi of Durga Pooja. One of the two accused is identified as Anjan Nama, a 35-year-old auto driver who is resident of the same village while other is still unidentified.

“Anjan and another man stormed into my house at midnight. They raped me and left me almost half-dead. When I regained my senses the next morning, I informed my neighbors. But Anjan is a very powerful person and we didn’t dare to take a stand against him,” the victim said.

The old woman, allegedly live alone in a house at Baraldi village of Kanchanpur area in the North Tripura district and is a widow. The incident reported took place on the night October 24, but came to light after the relatives of the woman took her to a police station and lodged an FIR.  

According to Bhanupada Chakroborty, superintendent of Police (North), the accused has been on a run but the police launched investigation soon after registering FIR under section 376 and 448 of IPC. “According to the complaint, accused Nama on finding her alone took her advantage,” another police official said.

After the assault took place on the night of October 24, the lady became very ill and she has been admitted to hospital after due medical test on October 29 last but is in stable condition now.

Bikramjit Shukladas, Kanchanpur Sub-divisional police officer also shared his concerns saying, “an investigation has begun and the charges are being examined.”
