Medical professionals and residents affected…

A second person in Kolkata died of dengue within a week. This time, it was a first-year orthopedics student at IPGMER who passed away at SSKM Hospital on Friday at 6:20 a.m.

Animesh Makhir, the student, was admitted to the hospital three days ago with a high fever and bleeding, and unfortunately, he experienced three consecutive cardiac arrests. He was placed on a ventilator.

Despite attempts to perform CPR, the young man could not be revived. Makhir is now the second doctor to have fallen victim to dengue in this current outbreak.

Ophthalmologist Debdyuti Chattopadhyay lost his life to the virus about a month and a half ago. He received treatment at a private hospital after experiencing a significant drop in platelet count, ultimately resulting in his demise.

As per sources from SSKM Hospital, Makhir experienced a severe capillary leakage that resulted in significant bleeding.

On October 20, a 45-year-old woman named Mamoni Naskar lost her life to dengue at a private hospital located off EM Bypass. She was a resident of Santoshpur and was admitted to the hospital in critical condition on the night of October 19. Tragically, she passed away within 12 hours of admission.

Starting from early August and extending until mid-September, the city experienced a significant rise in dengue cases. The total number of infections has surpassed 4,000, marking a two-and-a-half-fold increase compared to the previous year during the same period.

According to KMC sources, in 2018 and 2019, Kolkata had reported fewer than 1,500 cases up to mid-September. Although most private hospitals have witnessed a decline in dengue admissions, experts suggest that sporadic deaths might continue for approximately two more weeks.
