On December 17, one member of a gang was busted red handed when he was attempting to steal a Swift car in Sector 38. He is identified as Mohammed Sahib Ansari, 35-year-old resident of Sector 56 who is originally a native of Kashmir. Ansari along with alliance of other three formed a gang to steal vehicles two years ago.

The other three accused have been identified as Mohammed Saleem, 40-year-old and Sabir Ahmed Bhatt, 55-year-old are from Anantnag and are motor mechanics. The fourth accused is Aslam, 55-year-old resident of Ludhiana. He is also a motor mechanic and driver and originally a native of J&K.

“Sahib Ansari admitted their involvement in a number of vehicle theft cases, especially four-wheelers, in the last two years. He claimed that he stole cars on demand of his accomplices. He drove these vehicles to Anantnag, charged Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 depending on the make and mode of the vehicle and returned. Aslam had accompanied him to Anantnag several times. The gang members revealed the names of their other accomplices too. But they were not found at their hideouts, including two garages,” said a police official.

Usually the gang stole from Chandigarh and dispose the vehicles also in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. During an interrogation Ansari revealed that he had shifted to Chandigarh two years ago and met his accomplices at a mosque in Delhi. “We are in the process of establishing the sequence of events. Although all the four gang members were sent to judicial custody, we have certain leads about their accomplices. We took the assistance of J&K Police but failed to arrest the accused in Anantnag,” said ACP (south) Shruti Arora.
