AAP To Hold Protest In Delhi Over Gujarat Liquor Tragedy

36 died so far after consuming spurious liquor!

New Delhi: On Wednesday, 27 July 2022, The Aam Aadmi Party will hold a protest outside the BJP headquarters against the Hooch tragedy in the saffron party (BJP) ruled Gujarat.

The death-count due to the consumption of spurious liquor in Gujarat's Botad district went up to 28, according to a senior state police official.

"It's murder," AAP leader Durgesh Pathak said in a tweet on Tuesday, alleging people lost their lives after consuming spurious liquor sold when BJP government is in the power.

The hooch tragedy in Gujarat's Botad district adds to the ignominious list of deaths from consuming spurious liquor in India.

The death toll is now 36 and counting in a state where alcohol is prohibited. It comes barely days after a similar tragedy took a dozen lives in West Bengal’s Howrah district.

Earlier this year, consumption of such liquor during Holi celebrations claimed around 40 lives across Bihar, a state where alcohol is banned.

Hooch is made when ‘country alcohol’ or cheap distilled liquor (desi daru) is adulterated with industrial alcohol or methanol to increase its intoxicating potency.

National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data informed that 6,172 people died between 2016 and 2020 due to the consumption of illicit liquor in India. This means more than three deaths every day.

The AAP will protest against it on Wednesday at 1 pm in front of the BJP's headquarters in Delhi, he added.
