Actress R Subbalakshmi, 87, Passes Away

Malayalam cinema mourns the loss of a versatile and beloved talent


Renowned actor and musician R Subbalakshmi, aged 87 and the mother of actress-dancer Thara Kalyan, passed away on Thursday night. With a notable impact on Malayalam cinema and television, Subbalakshmi is remembered for her exceptional portrayals in grandmother roles.

 

Subbalakshmi charmed audiences with her versatility across a career spanning several decades. Memorable roles in films like "Kalyanaraman" (2002), "Pandippada" (2005), and "Nandanam" (2002) have left an enduring impact on the hearts of Malayalam cinema enthusiasts.

 

Subbalakshmi, besides being a talented actor, etched her name in history as the first woman composer at All India Radio in South India.

 

The late actor's television career was equally illustrious, featuring over 65 serials on Malayalam TV. Audiences fondly remember her impactful roles in shows like "Sreemahabhagavatham," "Kunjikkoonan," "Oru Penninte Katha," and "Seetha Kalyanam," among others. Her last appearance was in the ongoing show, 'Sudhamani Supera,' where she portrayed one of the lead characters.
