Al-Qaeda-linked terrorists nabbed in Assam

Assam Police busted ‘Jihadi’ Modules...

Assam Police officers informed that on Thursday they busted two ‘jihadi’ modules with links to a terror outfit in Bangladesh and made arrests of 10 terrorists in the last 48 hours. While one module was busted in the lower part of Assam in the Barpeta district, the other bust was in the Morigaon district of central Assam. The Assam Police said that both jihadi busts have links with the Bangladesh-based Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) which is a part of Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister told the reporters, “Action has been taken against jihadi modules and this is part of a coordinated effort with national agencies. There are several jihadi elements in Assam with links to radicalized outfits in Bangladesh. This happens because of the state’s close proximity with the neighbouring nation”.

This was not the first time when Jihadi elements from Bangladesh links were arrested in Assam. Earlier in the year, in March and April, ten residents of Barpeta district and one Bangladeshi national with links to the ABT were arrested in Assam.

Additional director general of police ADGP (special branch) Hiren Nath on the case said that “On Wednesday, Bongaigaon district police arrested one Abbas Ali from Goalpara district for links with ABT and also for sheltering a jihadi from Bangladesh”. He also added, “Based on his interrogation, eight more persons — seven in Barpeta and one in Guwahati — have been arrested.”

Police informed further investigation and operations are underway to unearth the linkages and the whole terror network embedded in Assam.
