Anna Hazare cancels indefinite fast against farm laws

Anna Hazare cancelled the indefinite fast after the central government agreed to some of his demands.

Social activist Anna Hazare announced on Friday that he would not continue with the indefinite fast which he had declared to begin on Saturday against the three farm laws in Ralegan Siddhi in Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra. The 84-year-old said this in the presence of Union Minister of State for Agriculture Kailash Choudhary and former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis.

Earlier when Mr Hazare had made the announcement of the indefinite fast, he had said, "I have been agitating for important demands of farmers for the last four years. It seems like the government is not taking proper decision on the issue of farmers. The government is not sensitive towards the farmers." "We have kept our demands before the Central Government time and again. I have written letters to the Prime Minister and Union Agriculture Minister five times in the last three months," the activist had said.

Mr Hazare has decided to suspend the indefinite hunger strike after the central government agreed to some of his demands. "The Union government has agreed to some of my demands and also announced setting up a committee to improve the lives of farmers. I have decided to suspend my proposed indefinite fast starting from Saturday," Mr Hazare said on Friday. Mr Hazare also said that the government has given him assurance of providing farmers the adequate returns for their crops due to which he decided to call off the protest.

Mr Choudhary said that Mr Hazare had asked them to increase the agriculture budget and they have significantly increased it. "We have appointed a high-level committee that will consist of members of Niti Ayog and persons nominated by Hazare. It will submit its report in six months," the minister added.
