AP minister’s Home Set On Fire Over Renaming Of District

Opposition slams govt. for failing to control the situation!


On Tuesday, the homes of Andhra Pradesh transport minister Pinipe Viswarup and MLA P Satish were set ablaze by locals as tensions prevailed in Amalapuram town over the renaming of Konaseema district as Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar Konaseema.

 

As per the information, the situation deteriorated after the police lathi-charged people protesting against the proposed renaming of the district. Incensed, the protesters allegedly took to stone-pelting and arson. A number of police personnel were left injured.

 

 Prohibitory orders under Section 144 were clamped in Amalapuram and additional police forces were rushed in to bring the situation under control.

 

According to the statement given by Telugu Desam chief N Chandrababu Naidu said in a statement, the arson in Konaseema, known for its peace, is unfortunate. This is completely a failure of the government and the police," read the statement.

 

State Congress president Sake Sailajanath too blamed the government over the incident.

 

State Home Minister Taneti Vanitha said instead of feeling proud about the inclusion of the BR Ambedkar name, anti-social elements were inciting violence, even set on fire a private school bus.

 

Further, "Unfortunately, over 20 police personnel sustained injuries in the incident. We will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and bring the culprits to book," Ms. Vanitha added.

 

Opposition parties also appealed to people to observe restraint and ensure peace returned to Konaseema.
