Assam: Himanta Biswa Sarma takes oath as the new Chief Minister

Sarbananda Sonowal was the first BJP chief minister of Assam who completed a successful five-year-term.

Finally, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) put a rest to the confusion about who would be the new chief minister of Assam. BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as the new CM and 13 members of his cabinet also took oath on Monday afternoon. Mr Sarma was "unanimously" elected the leader of the BJP's Legislature Party in Assam on Sunday.

Mr Sarma was administered oath by Governor Jagdish Mukhi in Guwahati and the swearing-in ceremony was attended by the BJP National President J P Nadda and several other leaders of the party as well as opposition parties.

Sarbananda Sonowal was the first BJP chief minister of Assam who completed a successful five-year-term. He was handed the state’s top post after the BJP-led alliance won in the assembly elections in 2016. However, the former chief minister is not part of the cabinet. Meanwhile, at least seven ministers of Mr Sonowal's cabinet of 17 members have been retained.

Mr Sarma has succeeded Mr Sonowal as the 15th Chief Minister of Assam. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mr Sarma and said he was confident "this team will add momentum to the development journey of Assam".
