Assam- Mizoram border clash "under control," says Centre

The Union Home Ministry said it has deployed CRPF troops to keep a check on both sides.

The Central Government on Tuesday said Assam-Mizoram border situation that escalated on July 26, in which 5 Assam policemen were killed and over 50 people were injured, is now "under control." The Union Home Ministry said it is closely observing the situation and it has deployed CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) troops to keep a check on both sides. CRPF ADG Sanjeev Ranjan Ojha said that two companies of the CRPF (one from 119 Battalion in Assam and the other from 225 Battalion in Mizoram), have been deployed at Lailapur-Vairengte site of contention, reported The Quint.

Earlier Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had tweeted that six Assam policemen had been killed in the clashes but later the administration confirmed the number of deaths and issued a clarification. Meanwhile, Mr Biswa and Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamliana will visit the border area where clashes took place on Monday. Reportedly, the clashes occurred two days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting in Shillong to resolve the issue.
