Woman had 2 more Acquaintances...

According to police in Guwahati, a woman who was recently arrested for muderingher husband and mother-in-law separately in July-August last year, chopped their body parts, and dumped them in the hills of neighbouring Meghalaya. Diganta Barah, the Guwahati police commissioner, told reporters that the accused, Bandana Kalita (32), a gym instructor, committed the crime with the assistance of two male associates, Dhanti Deka, a taxi driver, and Arup Deka, a vegetable seller.

According to Barah, investigation and interrogation of the three accused revealed that Bandana murdered her mother-in-law, Shankari Dey (62) in her house in the city's Chandmari area on the evening of July 26 last year, with the assistance of Arup. "They suffocated Shankari with a pillow first, then severed her head with a machete and a rolling pin once she was unconscious. They admitted to cutting the body into three pieces, placing them in a polythene bag brought by Dhanti and covering them with a blanket. They loaded the body parts into Dhanti's taxi (a Hyundai Accent) and drove to Meghalaya in the early hours of the next day. The body parts were thrown into the jungle between Shillong and Cherrapunjee " Barah said.

On the night of August 17, last year, they killed Bandana's husband Amarjyoti Dey in his Narengi home and cut his body into five pieces, according to Barah. "They similarly packed the body parts and dumped them in the jungles between Shillong and Dawki," he said. Police recovered some body parts in the Shillong-Cherrapunjee area, and efforts are underway to locate her husband's body parts.

Bandana's relationship with her husband and mother-in-law was strained, according to police. The police also said that her husband used to do drugs which strained their relationship. The mother and son duo also had many properties in Noonmati and Chandmarj area of Guwahati and earned quite well from the rent.

Bandana filed a missing persons complaint on 29 August but the police could not find any traces of the duo. On the other hand money was being withdrawn from the mother in law’s bank account arouse her nephew Dey’s suspicion which made him file a complaint on November 21. Bandana and Nirmalya filed separate complaints with the CID, Assam, and the Guwahati police commissionerate in February of this year, alleging that the investigations into their cases were stalled.

When the versions of Bandana and Nirmalaya did not match, police became suspicious and arrested the woman. Police arrested Dhanti Deka from Tinsukia in Eastern Assam, about 400 kilometres away, and Arup Deka from Guwahati's Khanapara area on Sunday based on Bandana's confessions. "Our investigation into Bandana's relationship with Dhanti and Arup is ongoing," Barah said.
