Basavaraj Bommai becomes new Chief Minister of Karnataka

Basavaraj Bommai has succeeded BS Yediyurappa who had resigned from the post on Monday.


Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday was sworn-in as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka and the oath of office was administered by Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot in the ceremony that took place at the Glass House of the Karnataka Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru. He became the 23rd CM of the state after the announcement was made following a party meeting on Tuesday.

Mr Bommai has succeeded BS Yediyurappa who had resigned from the post on Monday. He is the son of Janata Dal's SR Bommai, who was the former Chief Minister of Karnataka. Basavaraj joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2008 and prior to that he was a member of the Janata Dal (United).

Meanwhile, Mr Bommai will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi today in the evening. PM Modi congratulated him on taking oath as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka and wished him luck for his tenure. He also appreciated Mr Yediyurappa's "monumental contribution" towards the party.
