Bengal: Ram Navami clashes between two groups

Many vehicles were set on fire, stones were thrown, etc...

Today the Calcutta High Court ordered a probe during Ram Navami celebrations by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the violence that broke out in West Bengal.

Within two weeks so the NIA could take over the probe, the court also directed police to transfer all records and CCTV footage to the central government.

Last month when the clashes broke out between two communities in Howrah's Shibpur during Ram Navami celebrations, many vehicles were set on fire, stones thrown etc.

Later clashes were reported at Rishra in Hooghly district and Dalkhola in Uttar Dinajpur district as well.

Both ruling political parties (Trinamool Congress and BJP) shared videos as evidence blaming each other for the violence. After the clashes.

Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool Congress MP alleged that the BJP for seeking a probe by the NIA, a central body had approached to the high court, as they want to stop the investigation in the state.

They know they will be caught if the probe happens here," he said.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of allegedly trying to stoke communal tension during the procession. She alleged the BJP had hired goons from other states to orchestrate communal riots.

However, the BJP denied the allegations as "baseless" and accused the Mamata Banerjee government of appeasing Muslims and targeting Hindus.

"Hindus in Bengal are under threat," said BJP MP Locket Chatterjee.
