Bhowanipore voters to seal fate of Mamata Banerjee today

TMC leader Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay resigned from his post to vacate the Bhowanipore seat for Ms. Banerjee.

The voting started on Thursday at 7am for the bypoll Assembly constituency, Bhowanipore, the result of which will seal the fate of Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee. The counting of votes will be done on October 3.

Though the TMC emerged victorious in the Assembly elections that were held in April-May, Ms Banerjee lost Nandigram constituency to the BJP's Suvendu Adhikari, who was earlier a close aide of Mamata Banerjee but later switched sides. So, in order to enter the state Assembly, Ms Banerjee has had to contest and win elections before her time period of six months of being the Chief Minister without being an MLA gets over.

TMC leader Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay resigned from his post to vacate the Bhowanipore seat for Ms Banerjee. Priyanka Tibrewal of the BJP is contesting Bhowanipore polls against Ms Banerjee. Other than Bhowanipore, elections will also be held in Shamsherganj and Jangipur in Murshidabad district.
