Blast at illegal firecracker godown in Uttar Pradesh

At least three killed in blast in Kushinagar


The incident took place on Wednesday, in the basement of the house belonging to Jawed where high intensity explosives (crackers) were stored which is located in a narrow lane in densely populated part of ward-11 of Kaptanganj area.

“An explosion took place in an illegal firecracker go-down in Aryanagar area under Kaptanganj police station limits on Wednesday morning,” said Vinod Kumar Singh, Superintendent of police.

The residents of the area came out seeing massive cloud of smoke and informed the police. Police along with emergency services rushed to the spot soon after receiving the information about the blast. Fire tenders worked for three hours after which the fire was brought under control, according to the police.

Police further stated that, as fire erupted the cooking gas cylinder also exploded in the house and later come in contact with the fire crackers stored in the house, exploded. The cascading effect of the explosion was such that in few seconds Jawed’s house was charred and some adjacent houses were also damaged.

Three bodies have been recovered and identified as Jawed (35), his mother Fatima (65), and Nazia (14). While 11 to 12 are undergoing treatment at the district hospital who have been injured in the blast.

Piyush Kant Rai, Police Circle Officer of Kaptanganj said, “Relief work was still underway. Injure are undergoing treatment while three dead bodies have been recovered.”

The cause of fire is being ascertained, the police said.
