BMTC to launch 90 electric buses in Bengaluru by October

A JBM Auto Limited, an automobile manufacturing company will soon dispatch 90 mini electric buses at a cost of Rs 130 crore .


The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has announced that 90 new electric buses will be launched in the city from October on a trial basis. It aims to provide electronic buses to resolve the last-mile connectivity problems of Namma Metro passengers.

The electronic buses are being launched by BMTC with Smart City Bengaluru and the National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd. An automobile manufacturing company, JBM Auto Limited, will soon dispatch the 90 mini electric buses for Rs 130 crore.

BMTC Chairman N S Nandeesha Reddy said, as earlier many passengers faced problems related to the last-mile connectivity, now the electric buses from the BMTC will solve the problem. She said once the prototype is prepared, the BTMC will register for a safety certification. According to the plan, charging points will also be installed for the buses at metro stations. 

The buses will be operated on a Gross Cost Contract (GCC) basis, which implies that the private firm will supply the buses and will also take complete responsibility for operations, maintenance and will provide drivers as well.
