Boris Johnson quits as UK PM

UK political crisis begin as Boris Johnson resigns as UK Prime Minister

Boris Johnson on Thursday resigned as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The ministerial colleagues and lawmakers in his conservative party have been long bowing him to quit.

The battled conservative party leader, Boris Johnson finally stepped down as the Prime Minister. His resignation ended an unprecedented political crisis and triggered an election where a tory leader will go on to become the new leader.

Boris Johnson will remain in control at 10 Downing Street until the process of electing a new Prime Minister is finished by the time of the conservative party conference, which is scheduled for October.

After days of political drama, his move was finalised. Johnson was abandoned by his newly appointed ministers. On Tuesday majority of his cabinet had resigned and just minutes after his new chancellor Rishi Sunak wrote a public letter calling him to ‘go now’.

Approximately 30 UK government officials including key ministers such as UK health secretary Sajid Javid and chancellor of the exchequer Rishi Sunak have already submitted their resignations, in response to the recent scandals with former deputy chief whip Christopher Pincher.

Johnson made his decision to quit as one of his trusted allies Treasury Chief Nadhim Zahawi told him to quit for the good of the country. Johnson said that it was clear his party wanted a new leader was that his forced exit was ‘eccentric’ and a result of ‘herd instinct’ in the parliament.

Outside his office in downing street, Johnson made a speech where he said, “Today I have appointed a cabinet to serve, as I will, until a new leader is in place”.
