Brazil: landslides, floods killed dozens of people

In Brazil, coastal areas of southeast due to flooding and landslides at least 36 people have killed and hundreds of people lost their places.

 

 

In Sao Paulo state, On Sunday television and social media footage showed the town of Sao Sebastiao entire neighborhoods under water, houses flow away from mud, flood destroyed highways and cars by fallen trees.

 

 

The town, 200km (124 miles) north of the city of Sao Paulo and where many people from the capital spend the holiday weekend ahead of the Christian festival of Lent, was one of the hardest hit, as a record 600mm (24 inches) of rain fell in 24 hours, city officials said.

 

 

According to a statement from the Sao Paolo state government, at least 35 people have died in San Sebastiao. In the neighbouring town of Ubatuba, a seven year old girl was also killed, news reports said.

 

 

Emergency in five towns along with the coast has declared by Sao Paulo state Governor Tarcisio de Freitas. 

 

 

 

 According to the government 566 people had been displaced or made homeless.
