BS Yediyurappa resigns from the post of Karnataka Chief Minister

BS Yediyurappa will remain the caretaker CM till the new Chief Minister takes charge.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday resigned from the post as his government completed two years of rule in the state. Ending weeks of speculation, Mr Yediyurappa made the announcement of resignation at the end of his speech during the celebration. He broke down during the speech and said he will submit his resignation to Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot post-lunch.

The 78-year-old was teary-eyed when he announced his resignation but denied being sad about his farewell. Mr Yediyurappa thanked the BJP's leadership for giving him the opportunity "to rule as Chief Minister despite being over 75." The BJP has a maximum age limit of 75 years for Chief Ministerial post.

Mr Yediyurappa said that he took the decision himself and no one pressurised him to resign. He clarified that he has not given any names to the high command as his successor. Karnataka Governor Gehlot accepted Mr Yediyurappa's resignation and asked him to serve as the caretaker CM till the new Chief Minister takes charge.
