A 24-year-old man from Pakistan illegally entered the national borders of India with the motive to kill Nupur Sharma, a suspended Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader. His motives were fuelled by Sharma’s remarks on the Prophet Mohammad, but he was arrested at the international border in the Sriganganagar district of Rajasthan by the Border Security Force (BSF) police on Tuesday.

Anand Sharma, Superintendent of Police identified the accused man as Rizwan Ashraf, a 24-year-old from the Mandi Bahauddin district of Pakistan. Anand Sharma said that Ashraf was arrested by the BSF on the night of 16-17 July and that Ashraf possessed a bag containing two knives, religious textbooks, food and some clothes.

Anand Sharma reported that Ashraf has been handed over to the Hindumalkot police station. An FIR has been lodged against Ashraf under the relevant sections of the Foreigners Act, the Indian Passport Act and the Arms Act. A joint investigation team is also launched to probe into the matter which concluded on Tuesday evening. Anand Sharma said, “In the preliminary interrogation, he had revealed his plan to kill Nupur Sharma.

He seems to be religiously motivated. He was produced before a court, from where he was sent into police custody for five days”. He also added, “The Pakistani national was arrested on intervening night of July 16-17. During preliminary interrogation, the Pakistani man has revealed that he planned to kill Nupur Sharma. He seems to be religiously motivated,”.

Ashraf was presented before a local court which sent him to custody till July 24. He is currently interrogated by the joint interrogation committee (JIC) comprising BSF, state police and intelligence agencies officials as per a senior officer’s statement.
