Calcutta HC rejects plea for cancellation of Bhowanipore bypoll

The Bhowanipore Assembly Constituency bypoll will be conducted as scheduled on Thursday.

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday rejected a plea for cancellation of the Bhowanipore bypoll, where West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is a contestant. The Bhowanipore bypoll will be conducted as scheduled on Thursday.

The Chief Secretary had written to the Election Commission of India (ECI) requesting to hold the bypolls urgently so that the top executive post is not left vacant and does not result in "Constitutional crisis." To this, the ECI on September 6 had issued a notification that the bypoll would be conducted on September 30 referring to the special request of the chief secretary.

Though the High Court said it will not interfere with the ECI's decision of conducting Bhowanipore Assembly Constituency bypolls, it termed chief secretary's letter to the ECI "inappropriate." Mamata Banerjee will contest the election against Priyanka Tibrewal of the BJP.
