Calcutta High Court defers hearing of Mamata's petition against Nandigram poll result to June 24

The hearing has been deferred till June 24 by the Calcutta High Court.

The Calcutta High Court on Friday deferred the hearing of the petition filed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee against the election result of Nandigram constituency to June 24. Ms Banerjee had filed a petition in the High Court asking to declare the election of Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari who won Nandigram with a slight margin of 2,000 votes, as null and void. The case was heard by Justice Kaushik Chanda who directed the petitioner's lawyer to serve copies of the election petition to the opposite parties. In the petition, Ms Banerjee accused Mr Adhikari of committing corrupt practises, promotion of hatred and enmity, seeking votes on the basis of religion and booth capture. Amit Malviya of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took a dig at the Chief Minister by tweeting, "How do you lose an election twice? First, at the hustings and then, like a sore loser, challenging people's verdict in the court. It would be fascinating to see Mamata Banerjee suffer the humiliation of Nandigram defeat twice over," his tweet read.
