A Dalit women age 20 was allegedly raped by four men from the so called upper caste community on Hathras, Uttar Pradesh on September 14. She succumbed to her injuries in the hospital of Delhi later and was cremated on September 30 near her residence.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has charged four accused in the case of gangrape and murder of the Dalit women in Hathras on September earlier. The CBI has charged the accused of the case under the SC/ST (Prevention Atrocities) Act 1989. The case which was first handled by the Uttar Pradesh police and was heavily criticized after they decided to cremate the victim’s body late in the night without the approval of the family members, which led to anger among the citizens across the country. However the police said that the cremation was done ‘as per the wishes of the family.’ The probe conducted by the CBI was monitored by the Allahabad High Court as per the directive of the Supreme Court in October. The prime accused in the case had written to the UP police from the jail where he claimed that he along with the three other accused are being ‘framed’  and demanded ‘justice’ for all of them. He also accused the girl’s family of torturing her. The victim girl’s family denied all such allegations against themselves.
