Centre To Discussion On Manipur

In Parliament at 2 pm…

This week, the government will introduce a bill in parliament for control of services and officers' posting in Delhi.

It will set up the stage for a showdown with the opposition. The bill was earlier an ordinance.

On Monday, 31 July 2023, the government agreed to a discussion on the Manipur issue in the Rajya Sabha at 2 pm.

The opposition insisted on a debate under Rule 267 only of the House, forcing the chairman to adjourn proceedings till the afternoon.

Rule 267 of the Rajya Sabha rulebook allows for the suspension of the day's business to debate on any issue suggested by a member.

"We want discussions on Manipur to take place in Parliament today at 2 pm. They (Opposition) are trying to misuse the liberty given to the members.

The government is ready to discuss Manipur, but the Opposition has already spoiled crucial days of the House," Union Minister and Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha, Piyush Goyal said.

Parliament proceedings have been affected by the opposition's demand for PM Modi to speak on the Manipur ethnic conflict in parliament.

Amit Shah has said he was ready to respond to a discussion in parliament on Manipur.

But the opposition rejected Mr. Shah's offer; and moved a no-confidence motion against the ruling government.
