China Purchases Indian Rice, First Time After Decades

The Indian Industry official told an eminent news agency that in the last three past decades China has purchased rice from India for the first time. This move by the Chinese government has come only due to the tightened supplies and India’s sharply discounted prices. China is the biggest importer of rice and India is the biggest exporter of rice in the world. Every year Beijing imports 4 million tons of rice but has always avoided buying their rice from India citing quality issues.

Amid the tensions in the border between the two nations in the Himalayas this step is seen as a progress toward peace between the two nations. The President of the Rice Exporters Association, BV Krishna Rao said “For the first time China has made rice purchases. They may increase buying next year after seeing the quality of Indian crops.” The industry official also stated that the traders in India have received a contract for an export of 100,000 tones of broken rice for the December-February shipment at the rate of $300 per ton.

Thailand, Vietnam and Pakistan have always been China’s traditional rice suppliers, but this year due to limited surplus supplies for export purposes and also their prices were $30 per ton more as compared to the Indian rice prices, according to the Indian rice trade officials.
