China To Setup Dam On Brahmaputra in Tibet.

China building a dam on river Brahmaputra.

Brahmaputra River known as Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet is soon going to have a hydropower project to be built by a Chinese company, whose proposal is to formulate the 14th Five-year-plan (2012-25). The POWERCHINA company whose alternate name is Power Construction Crop of China is the concerned company responsible with the construction of the dam. The Chinese official media reported that the project would serve to maintain water resources and profess the country’s national security.

The chairman of the Power Construction Corp of China, Yan Zhiyong said “There is no parallel in history…it will be a historic opportunity for the Chinese hydropower industry”, at the 40th anniversary of the founding of China Society for Hydropower Engineering.

India and Bangladesh is irked by China's plan of building a dam on the river Brahmaputra in Tibet as China has undermined this eagerness by saying it would keep its interest in mind.

The Indian Government has regularly expressed its views and concerns to the Chinese authorities and have appealed to them to ensure that the interests of the downstream states are not distressed by the activities of the upstream states.China has materialized 1.5 billion USD Zam Hydropower station in 2015 in Tibet.

To discuss various issues related to trans border rivers, India and China in 2006 had established Expert Level Mechanism (ELM). During the flood seasons China provides hydrological information of the river Brahmaputra and river Sutlej under the existing bilateral Memorandums of Understanding. China under this arrangement provides flood season data between May 15 and October 15 every year of the river Brahmaputra.

This hydropower exploitation at the downstream of the Yarlung Zangbo river which is 60 million kilo-watt hours (kWh) has the potential to provide 30 million kWh clean, renewable and zero carbon electricity annually.
