Congress appoints Navjot Singh Sidhu Punjab party chief

Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi also appointed four working presidents for the Punjab unit of the party.

Days of speculation came to rest after the Congress on Sunday appointed former minister Navjot Singh Sidhu the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief. Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi also appointed four working presidents for the Punjab unit of the party-  Sangat Singh Gilzian, Sukhwinder Singh Danny, Pawan Goel and Kuljit Singh Nagra. The rift between Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and Mr Sidhu had been going on for long and Mr Sidhu had been demanding elevation in the party amid upcoming State Assembly elections in 2022 polls.

Meanwhile, 11 MLAs on Sunday showed their full support to Mr Singh by calling him "tallest leader of masses" and appealed to the party's high command not to let him down, reported The Indian Express. MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira said in a joint statement issued by the legislators that this change will harm the party's prospects in the 2022 polls as only six months are left in the elections.

In June, Mr SIdhu had met party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and the Congress had formed a committee of three members to resolve the issue. Mr SIdhu had attacked Mr Singh several times in the past for his ways of handling different issues such as power shortages and sand, liquor and transport mafias.
