Congress government topples in Puducherry as CM V Narayanasamy resigns from the post

Two more MLAs resigned on Sunday, a day before the floor test.

Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy resigned on Monday from the post after he failed to prove his government's majority in the floor test. In addition to the four MLAs, two more resigned on Sunday that dropped the number below the majority mark.

Speaker of the Assembly ,V P Suvakolundhu, announced that the confidence motion moved by Mr Narayanasamy stands defeated. The Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues staged a walkout after which the government toppled. Shortly after, Mr Narayanasamy submitted his resignation to Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan.

Earlier in the day, Mr Narayanasamy moved the motion and gave a long speech in which he blamed the BJP and NR Congress of toppling the government. He said that the Speaker did not accept their argument that the nominated MLAs do not have the right to vote after which the Congress staged a walkout.

For now, it is unclear whether the LG will go for the President's rule or allow the opposition to form a new government just months ahead of the assembly elections.
