Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Kanhaiya Kumar and Dalit rights activist as well as independent Gujarat MLA from Vadgam constituency, Jignesh Mevani are set to join the Indian National Congress (INC) next week. Earlier they were scheduled to join the party on October 2 but reportedly, the event will now take place on September 28, on the birth anniversary of Bhagat Singh.

Mr Mevani had won in 2017 with the support of the Congress. People started knowing his name across Gujarat and the country after he raised issues concerning Dalits. Mr Mevani had helped around more than 10,000 Dalit families to get possession of their land, who had government land on paper but did not have possession for years.

On the other hand, Kanhaiya Kumar was earlier the President of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU). Both are likely to join the Congress in order to fight against the ruling party in 2024 elections.
