HC grants bail to activist Nodeep Kaur

Dalit Labour Activist Nodeep Kaur on Thursday was granted bail in an attempt to murder case by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. She was arrested from the labourers’ protest site at the Kundli border point and was lodged in a jail in Karnal in Haryana. The police authorities were accused by Ms Kaur of sexual assault under custody but the authorities denied all such allegations.

Hearing her plea and Suo Moto registered in connection with her matter, the Bench of Justice Avneesh  Jhingan granted her bail. However, the court will continue to hear the matter, with regards to allegations of her illegal detentions.

Nodeep Kaur was arrested from a labour protest which was demanding higher wages and concurred with the ongoing farmers’ agitation against the three new farm laws by the center and it also stood in solidarity with it. On February 6 her case gained international attention when the US Vice President’s niece Menna Harris tweeted saying “23-year old labour rights activist Nodeep Kaur was arrested, tortured and sexually assaulted in police custody.”
