Delhi govt hikes fares of Auto Rickshaw, Taxi amid rising CNG Prices...

Delhi Govt. approves revised fares!

Amid rise in the prices of Compressed natural Gas (CNG), the Delhi government has hiked the fare prices of auto rickshaw and taxi.

According to the government decision, a commuter taking an auto will have to pay Rs 30 instead of the existing Rs 25 for the initial 1.5 km. For every subsequent km, the passenger will have to pay Rs 11 instead of Rs 9.

This comes as a relief to nearly two lakh auto rickshaw and taxi drivers who had to bear more costs due to recent hikes in CNG prices. With the approval of the Delhi government, the new fares for auto rickshaws and taxis shall be applicable once these are notified in the coming weeks.

The auto fares were last revised in 2020, while the same for the taxi was done in 2013.

Delhi’s Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot had received many representations from the auto-rickshaw and taxi associations/unions on this issue. Hence, a committee of 13 members was formed in May 2022 to review and recommend the fares in the wake of an increasing rate of CNG, cost and maintenance of auto-rickshaw and taxi, and various other issues affecting the net earnings of auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers.

According to the statement, Kailash Gahlot said, "We have seen fuel prices in India going up in recent months, which has impacted the profits of drivers. The increased cost led them to further drive fewer km, which ultimately impacted the citizens traveling to their offices or home. The revised fares will help them to support their families and will also provide convenience for passengers with increased availability of auto-rickshaws and taxis in the city."
